ETHICUS Yamazaki also participated! A once-in-a-lifetime coffee festival where city and local culture intersect, held on the riverbank in Koka City, Shiga Prefecture

The Kibugawa Riverside Coffee Market will be held at a special venue on the Somagawa riverbed, about a 5-minute walk from Kibugawa Station on the JR Kusatsu Line and Ohmi Railway in Koka City, Shiga Prefecture.

This event takes place in an unusual location, where 11 coffee professionals from various regions, from Hyogo Prefecture in the west to Shizuoka Prefecture in the east, will come together on the riverbank in a local area.

From CROWD ROASTER , ETHICUS Yoshiya Yamazaki who boasts having participated in the most coffee festivals among all the participating roasters, will be setting up a stall.

The Kibugawa Riverside Coffee Market was planned with the aim of creating a place where city and local areas can mix and create a new coffee community.

We want to bring a new wind of specialty coffee to Shiga.

Dolly, the representative of DONGREE COFFEE ROASTERS, the organizer of this event, opened a small coffee stand in Kyoto in 2016. She then moved to Shiga in 2019 and currently runs a coffee roaster in Konan City, Shiga Prefecture.

Dolly, CEO of DONGREE COFFEE ROASTERS

I would like to bring to Shiga the same atmosphere I felt in Kyoto, where the specialty coffee community was expanding as the number of coffee roaster stores and coffee events gradually increased throughout the city.

I used to dislike coffee, but after encountering coffee roasters and attending coffee festivals, I started to like it. I'd like to hear more stories like that in Shiga.

To achieve this, the key will be to create a market in Shiga that brings together specialty coffee roasters.
Just as Dolly was thinking about this, she received a request to "organize a coffee event that will be the highlight of Gacha Fes" (derived from the nickname of the Ohmi Railway, Gachacon) which is held once a year by the local railway company, Ohmi Railway, around Kibugawa Station, the southernmost station. This is how the project got underway.

If we can invite specialty coffee roasters from all over the country to this peaceful town, with its views that cannot be found in urban areas and the peace and quiet of the time, we will surely be able to bring a new wind of specialty coffee to Shiga.
This was not just a standalone coffee festival, but a tie-up with the local railway company, which was also an important factor in Dolly's decision to hold the event in this area.

A nostalgic railway line and a tranquil riverbank.

The style of this event is different from the coffee festivals that have been rapidly evolving in urban areas in recent years, but the quality of the coffee roasters is unmistakable.
What we focused on was the concept of "local x city" and the "scale of the market."

It's not that you can't earn money because you're local, but that you can earn money because you're local

The plans are made with the market size in mind.

One idea for local areas where there is little information about specialty coffee is the "types of coffee tickets."

As is common at coffee festivals around the country, two types of tickets are sold: "Ten Shin Ranman," which is a ticket that can be used freely at any coffee shop of your choice, and "Ichigo Ichie," which has the name of a designated coffee shop printed on the ticket.

"Ichigo Ichie" wants people to get rid of preconceived notions such as "the shop is far away and unusual" or "there's always a line so it looks popular," and to discover a variety of coffee flavors and roasters.
We want both customers and coffee roasters to enjoy the once-in-a-lifetime experiences that occur on the local riverbank. This ticket was created with that idea in mind.

This will be the first time the event is held, and Yoshiya Yamazaki ETHICUS who is also participating in CROWD ROASTER will also be setting up a stall.
It will be interesting to see what kind of Manabu ETHICUS ' top specialty coffee will have locally.

Additionally, various initiatives are being carried out around the venue, Kibugawa Station in Koka City, as part of urban development. The event is intended to encourage people to rediscover the charms of Kibugawa and visit the surrounding areas, so the coffee festival is a community-based collaboration with local businesses and organizations.

For coffee lovers and those who want to enjoy coffee for the first time.
While you're on your local train journey in Shiga, be sure to stop by the Kibugawa Riverside Coffee Market.
