Esmeralda Farm's quest for the best coffee
It was the ``rediscovery'' of the Geisha variety that suddenly made Panama's coffee famous worldwide.
The floral, unique and noble flavor, also known as Geisha flavor, shocked the coffee industry and quickly became highly acclaimed all over the world.
The Esmeralda Farm in the Boquete district of Chiriquí in western Panama is the place that started it all and continues to produce the highest quality Panama Geisha to this day.
Geisha coffee tree, an original species brought from Ethiopia, had already been brought to Panama, but it had been forgotten due to its low productivity and suitability for the cultivation environment.
The Peterson family, owners of Esmeralda Farm, took notice of Geisha .
They discovered that Geisha , which is grown in high-altitude farmland, has a unique and noble flavor (some say jasmine scent) that is similar to the native species of Ethiopia, but is different from it.
As a result of exhibiting this Geisha in the 2004 auction "Best of Panama", it won splendidly, and after that it left an extraordinary result of winning for four years, and the name of Geisha and Esmeralda Farm became famous all over the world. It became widely known. What's more, the auction set the world's highest bid price in 2004, and has continued to set new world record prices ever since. This was the beginning of Geisha whirlwind that continues to this day.
After that, an auction category was started for Esmeralda Farm's coffee only, and as a farm where everything is treated as something special, it became the coveted target of buyers all over the world.
Esmeralda Farm Category
Although Esmeralda Farm has risen to such a special status, it has never slackened its pursuit of quality.
They strictly controlled the production process, strictly separated lots, and ranked the coffee they produced through objective evaluation.
Currently, Geisha variety from Esmeralda Farm in Panama is divided into three brands: Esmeralda Special, Private Collection, and Geisha 1500.
The highest rank, "Esmeralda Special", is a brand that can only be named by Geisha of special quality exhibited at private auctions, and is cultivated in both Jaramillo and Caña Verde areas, which are located at an altitude of 1,600m to 1,800m. With a high cupping rating of 87 to 90 points, you can clearly feel the rich aroma and other characteristics of Esmeralda's highland-grown Geisha . It is produced under the same strict controls as Esmeralda Special.

Geisha 1500 is Geisha grown in an area above 1400m, and although it is not grown at high altitudes, it is a well-managed lot.
Cultivation of difficult Geisha species
Geisha variety, which is native to Ethiopia, is known to be very delicate when it comes to cultivation.
It is susceptible to diseases such as rust (it suffered catastrophic damage in the 1970s), and suitable cultivation environments are limited. Geisha 's unique floral and jasmine flowers are produced only when the following conditions are met: moderately high altitude, low temperature, appropriate sunshine hours, moderate rainfall (not too much), and fertile, well-drained soil with a pH value of around 5 to 6. It is said that such flavor does not come out.
Esmeralda Farm is one of the few farms in the world suitable for growing these Geisha varieties, as evidenced by the fact that there are almost no other Geisha varieties with the same flavor.
Even from the same Panamanian farm, the flavor will vary depending on the environment and terroir.
On the other hand, at Esmeralda Farm, the climate and soil are slightly different in each cultivation area, and the flavors that emerge are also slightly different.
